Lucca, a city of the Tuscany region in Italy
Lucca is a city and a commune of the Tuscany region in Italy. The city stands on the Serchio River which flows into the Ligurian Sea. Lucca with the population of about 85,000 is the capital city of the Lucca province.
The history of Lucca delves back to the Etruscans times and later in 180 B.C. the city became a Roman colony. The plan of the city is still similar to the Roman and the main square of Lucca Piazza San Michele stands on the site of the ancient Roman forum. The Piazza dell'Anfiteatro is the remains of the ancient amphitheatre. Lucca was a major fort and city during the Odoacer rule and under the Lombards. Its period of prosperity began in the 11th century, when silk trade routes were established. Later it became practically independent with the formal rule of the Holy Roman Empire. Lucca was the second independent republic in Italy after Venice. It existed as an independent state till 1805, when Napoleon occupied the country. After the Napoleonic Wars Lucca was turned into Bourbon-Parma duchy and in 1847 was finally included in the Kingdom of Italy.
One of the Lucca’s main attractions is its well-preserved ancient city walls. There a lot of medieval monuments and the most major are: Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, Piazzale Verdi, St Martin's Cathedral, Piazza Napoleone, Piazza San Michele, The Ducal Palace, Basilica di San Frediano, The Clock Tower, Villa Garzoni, Museo Nazionale Guinigi and many others. Also Lucca gave birth to such famous composers as Giacomo Puccini, Nicalao Dorati, Francesco Geminiani, Gioseffo Guami, Luigi Boccherini, and Alfredo Catalani.
